The Arrival

As the taxi you took from the airport seems to delve further and further into what seems like an endless canopy of cypress trees, you begin to wonder if perhaps the cab driver is lost, drunk, insane, or all three. As you are about to ask the driver where you are, the treeline parts and you find yourself back on a semblance of a paved road. As you continue on, you pass a carved wooden sign that says "Welcome to Deadbrook." The paint is chipped and faded, and you wonder why there is no "population of" part on the sign. Instead, there is an ornate sigil carved beneath the words, and a pair of decorative fish in each upper corner.

As you roll over an old rickety wooden bridge (not unlike the one described in Sleepy Hollow), the cab driver asks you where in town you'd like to be. Your contact told you he'd meet you at the center of town.

"Center of town, please." The cab driver snorts a semblance of a laugh. As you raise an eyebrow, he begins to slow the car and roll to a halt.

"Well, here you are."

You look out the window, and see a few buildings standing around lonely. The realization that you have accepted an assignment in a very, very tiny town hits you like a brick and you let out a deep sigh. You pull the handle and as you step out into the gravel road you are hit by a wave of humidity. As you groan a bit, you hear the trunk slam down and you turn to see the cabbie bringing your suitcase around. As you pay your fare, you look around to see if you can find anyone to ask for directions.

As the cab drives away, you spot a man slowly making his way over to you. He is fairly young, and something is shining on his shirt. As he approaches you, you see that it's a sheriff's badge pinned onto his shirt.

"Hello, I'm Ben Tanaka, the town sheriff." He extends his hand. You shake it. "Thank you for coming out all this way."
